Hey, this is Dan Lok. If you don’t know me, we have generated over a hundred million dollars in coaching and digital core sales. In the last couple years today, we are going to talk about how do you position yourself in the marketplace as a mentor, as a coach or as a consultant. And what is the difference between these three roles? Number one, right? We have mentor and number two, we have coach and number three, we have consultant. So let’s talk about consultant first as a consultant. What you do is you usually have specialized knowledge. You have expertise in certain area, maybe a text consultant, or maybe a, a business consultant, or maybe a digital marketing consultant. Now, as I’m teaching you this, I want you to think about this from two different angles. Number one, how do you position yourself in the marketplace? Number two is when you want to grow your business, are you hiring a mentor?

Are you hiring a coach or are you hiring a consultant? So you can look at this from how you sell and how you position yourself in the marketplace, as well as how you buy. So a consultant has specialized knowledge. They know certain topics, right? They are good with certain things. Now, as a consultant, it doesn’t mean that you are more successful than your clients. As a consultant. Chances are you are solving a specific problem for your clients, right? You are giving them advice. You are giving them the how to, because you have certain connections or you have certain relationships, or you have certain knowledge and expertise. So that’s a consultant. And then you have a coach. I believe he’s what a good coach does. A good coach brings out the best within you. A good coach holds you accountable, just like a, a fitness coach, a, a boxing coach, right?

They are holding you accountable and they ask you good questions. They make you think about things, right? They make you think about what you do. They make you look at what you do from a different perspective. That’s a coach. Now, a mentor on the other hand, it’s different from a coach and a different from a consultant. A mentor is someone who’s been there and done that. Imagine you are going to climb Mount Everest, right? A mentor is someone who has gone up the mountain and come back alive. Many, many, many times someone who’s been there and done that. Someone who’s made all the mistakes. Someone’s got arrows right on their back. Someone who could tell you, Hey, there’s a pothole. There don’t go there. Right? There’s danger there. Don’t do that. I have done that before. You should take this route. So a mentor, someone who’s been there and done that someone who has created results.

So think about what you do as a coach. You do not need to be more successful than your clients because that’s not your role. Your role is to hold them accountable. Your role is to ask good questions. As a consultant. You’re giving advice. You’re telling them what to do. It doesn’t mean you’re more successful. My tax consultant is not more successful than me, right? Financially. My insurance consultant is not more successful than me. Right? My legal consultant is not more successful than me. Does that make sense? Right. However, my mentor, on the other hand, my mentors are more successful than me. They have built bigger businesses. They have been there and done that. They have got their case of experience. So how do you want to position yourself in the marketplace? And they’re all good, but you have to be very, very clear. Are you a mentor? Are you a coach or are you a consultant? So let me summarize a consultant gives advice. A coach asks questions. A mentor shows the path until next time go high ticket.
